Project Partners

Partner Countries

14 countries in South America and Africa have been trained in the CD-REDD project. 12 of them finished the project successfully and completed the training activities for a national GHG inventory report. These countries were:

  • Argentina
  • Botswana
  • Dominican Republic
  • Ecuador
  • Ghana
  • Guyana
  • Liberia
  • Malawi
  • Namibia
  • Nigeria
  • South Africa
  • Suriname
  • Tanzania
  • Zambia

Some of them are UN-REDD countries as well, engaged in other international or bi-national capacity projects, and thus the build capacity will be developed further.

Implementing Partners

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), in the context of its International Climate Initiative (IKI) and assisted by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), established a capacity building programme on National GHG Inventory for the AFOLU sector, with the collaboration of the Coalition for Rainforest Nations (CfRN) and the Thünen Institute of Forest Ecosystems in Germany (TI).

The project had a “Coordination Committee” where the project actors interacted with the actors of the other parallel initiatives and with regional representative of countries. The Committee defined and oversaw project activities, coordinated technical units; and organized annual global meetings and common training sessions.

  • The CfRN hold the Secretariat of the Coordination Committee and carried out training activities in a cluster of countries.
  • TI carried out training activities in another cluster of countries and was supported in their in-country actions (training, visit, etc.) by GIZ.
  • Implementing Partners: US-EPA, FAO (as UN-REDD), REDD+ countries. Other partners can join this initiative on the basis of mutual agreement.
  • Coordinating Partners: GIZ, and UNFCCC Secretariat.

The CD-REDD II team hold discussions with the UNFCCC Secretariat on how best to coordinate their GHG inventory capacity building activities. Coordination included sharing information on capacity building needs, in order to identify technical gaps that require further support, feedback on progress made in partner countries regarding the implementation of training activities. This also included joint development and sharing of software tools, manuals, templates, and training materials.
